so my song of the day is...drum roll...



So Invisible Children is an organization that has been working towards seeing an end to the longest running war in Africa taking place in Uganda. Starting last Saturday thousands of people in 9 countries and 100 cities came out to protest the war and to spread the word. It's not right that this is just one of MANY human right violations, but we can speak for those who don't have a voice and see an end to it. Once the war is over there will still be a lot of work to do, but the war has to end before the children and people of Northern Uganda can move forward.

It's crazy that Invisible Children was started by three friends at the age of 20! and now seven-ish years later look at what they've done. CRAZY! Our generation is looked to be apathetic.. but this doesn't have to be the case.

If you go to the Invisible Children website there is a live feed and surrently they're listening to Sufjan Stevens, earlier they were listening to TV on the Radio.. so props to them.

Anyway, sorry for my rant.. Oprah is about to come on.. this explains the song of the day. So the final city to be "rescued" was Chicago and it was rescued by Oprah. The word will for sure be out now. Here's how they got her attention:

Hello there. It, again, has been awhile since either Nanda or I have posted but fret not.

I have recently been in a Beirut phase. They were just in DC playing a sold out show. Beirut is one of those bands that you really have to take time to listen to their music in order to truly appreciate it. Here's a little taste of their wonderful sound:



In other news Coachella 2009 is happening as we speak. Looking at the lineup I don't think I'd know what to do with myself if I was there. I'm not one for music festivals, but I think I could make an exception for something like Coachella.

That wasn't the greatest up date, but we'll be back sooner this time. All I have left to say is that allergy season has arrived and it's no fun, but the weather has been so lovely that I can't complain.

Don't You Forget About Me

well, it certainly has been a while. so many days--weeks even have passed. experiences changed us. the world became clearer/more confusing. but what matters, what is held constant, and what connects us remains ever evolving! that is, we may not have been blogging because we were too lazy/overworked/sleepy/drunk/without internet access/abducted by aliens... but, oh, the music never stops...there is so much goodness out there!!!

I'm specially excited about the new grizzly bear album that is to come out in may. this is old news, but its been leaked, but its low quality, so do it like me, and just sit and wait. In the meanwhile, you can scratch the itch with one of the songs from Veckatimest, Two Weeks... its sooooooooooo good (btw, you can also check out a spanking new grizzly bear v. Jay Z mash-up here. it's whatever, and Mr. Droste called it "unsolicited" on his twitter)

Also, my obsession with Bon Iver is yet to cease. Exciting stuff: you can get some free live stuff off of their myspace blog. It's good stuff. If you didn't think it could get better.. it does.

In other news Animal Collective is doing a show at the Ottobar in Baltimore! It's sold out, though. If you want to go bad enough there is always a means of getting yourself inside. I can only imagine how amazing that show is going to be as the Ottobar is a pretty small place that allows for those intimate moments.

Stop listening to country music! Its for your own good.

Once again I was proved right!

Thanks to science (and Brightest Young Things for making me aware of this article), I once again have the upper hand in my perpetual fight against country music.

According to some random scientific journal and most likely some questionable research methods, it has been shown that the greater the airtime of country music the higher the suicidal rates of Caucasians. So people the love of what is sacred--stop listening to country music!

i had dreams, that frightened me awake

seriously, yay for the internet!

The other day I was thinking about how imperative the internet is for the music world today, yea yea there are talks of record sales being low, but let's face it, when they were high, the majority of the artists with high record sales were n*sync, backstreet boys, and all that other poop.

This isn't to say that music is necessarily better today than what it was, by no means, its impossible to make that claim. But I can say that we do have a much more democratic way to gaining access to and selecting the music that we choose to listen. And if this isn't revolutionary in a power-to-the-people way, then I don't know what is.

I'm very excited to be living and enjoying music at this time (especially since the end might be near... 2012 is around the corner!) , we have unprecedented access to new bands and sounds from around the world, which makes it for an almost overwhelming amount of music that you can explore.

That being said, the real reason for this post is that Noisepop posted a Deerhunter and Ra Ra Riot concert on youtube. I haven't listened to the RRR one yet, but Deerhunter, as always, is amazing. And if it weren't for the quasi mystical powers of the internet, we would have never gotten a chance to experience these concerts.

Music for Bondfires

Playlist for the week!

So we're still very much so obsessed with some of the brilliant tracks of Dark was the Night, and as you can see our playlist reflects that.

The opening and closing tracks on this week's playlist are two Radiohead songs, Electioneering and Talk Show Host. I chose these tracks not only because they have been on repeat on my ipod but also because I believe they show the two sides of Radiohead that I love the most.

I choose these tracks because I feel that they are representative of all the things that I love about Radiohead. Electioneering has that irresistable energy and Talk Show Host embodies what I believe to be their more dark sensuous side. You should listen to both of these on a high volume to as to surround yourself with the their amazing sound, well really that's the only way to listen to Radiohead.

The overall theme for this week turned out to be music for the bondfire. The tracks in the beginning may fall out of the overall theme, but I encourage you to see them as the precursors to the bondfire, music that gets you going and gets you crazy. The middle tracks are provide that magic of people getting together and singing along, and I think that the closing tracks have that certain end of the night je ne sais quoi.

BRILLANT! Nanda's song/ video of the day

The other day my friend and I were talking about how much we love la blogothèque, and seriously if you haven't checked it out yet... well, there may be doubt as to whether there is any hope left for you.

Today, while seeing what was happening at the blogotèque, I stumbled upon this amazing Walkmen's video.

Once again Vincent Moon, the genius behind these short films, proved his brilliance. He started a video series that takes place in NYC and its called the In a Van Sessions. Which is a different take on the Parisian version of The Take Away Shows.

What I love about these videos, is that Moon is able to create such an intimate atmosphere in which you can't help but to feel as if you are a part of that moment. And then, inevitably, it only leaves you wanting for more and to wonder what happened in the moments before and after the video.

I think these videos give you an insight to what is like to be in the artistic world. <3

Nanda's song(s) of the day

So this is exciting.
It's Blitz the new album from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is coming out and it promises to make you sweat-- on the dance floor, that is.

The two tracks that have leaked from this album are pretty sweet, with the right amount of your usual YYYs angst-y energy and a new danceable beats. I'm looking forward to the album release on April 14th.

Named after the Massachusetts island, Veckatimest, it is one of the most anticipated albums of 2009. I'm very excited, and so should you be. I hope to see them on Bonnaroo.

Time delay...

Agh! Unfortunately in life you end up having to do a lot of things that you don't want to, leaving you with little time to do what you really want to. Example, metaphysics exam and work had to be done... updating this spanking new blog...had to wait.

C'est la vie, as the French say, so moving on... this past week was very exiting because Dark Was the Night was released, on Feb. 17th. And if you haven't checked it out yet--you must!

It is not only a stunning album with a stellar group of contributers, but its for a good cause as well. All the proceeds will benefit the Red Hot Organization which is an international charity dedicated to raising money and awereness for AIDS/ HIV.

Dark Was the Night was produced by The National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner, and they have been putting this album together for the past three years! They recently had a special on Sirius XMU, where they gave some insight about the tracks and the artists. If you have a chance to listen to that, I highly recommend it.

One of the stories that stood out for me, was the one about their own song. Aaron said that the night before they were going on the studio to record this song, they sent a copy of their song Around the Bend to musical genious Nico Muhly, asking him to come up with the arrangements for it. And by the next morning, Nico sent them the beautiful musical arrangement that you hear on the track!

Ah, to have that talent!

The Books Feat. Jose Gonzales - Cello Song

-This Nick Drake cover is beautiful and upbeat. I really like it. And that is something, cuz all who know me know that I have a chip on my shoulder when it comes to Jose Gonzales, there is no real reason why I don't like him. Jose Gonzales or not, I totally enjoy this song - I think it sounds exotic, mysterious, and very inviting.

The National - So Far Around The Bend (streaming at DWtN website, or on this blog too!)

-The National have been playing this song live for a while now, sadly I can't recall whether they played it when I saw them. This is the song that I very inarticularly telling you about, where Nico Muhly does the arrangement for them.

Yeasayer - Tightrope

-Yeasayer is one of those bands where whenever I listen to their song, I tell myself: oh I really like this! but then I forget to get their album! c'est tragic. I really like this song! I think its great for early spring, sunny days when the air is crisp.

Antony + Bryce Dessner - I Was Young When I Left Home

-Dylan cover. very good. I don't usually like Antony's voice, but he does this song justice. Just listen to it.

Sufjan Stevens - You Are The Blood

-Again, I can't say that I was a big Sufjan Stevens fan. But this song made me a believer. Its 10 minutes long, he gets weird, he plays the piano. I love it. Its a Castanets cover.

These are the top 5 from that album, and its safe to say, that Dark Was the Night is a beautiful album, and it might show you a different side from artists that you had an already formed and perhaps unjustified opinion.

Nanda's song of the day

people are weird and people act strange...get yourself together and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE

Today's song is The Rapture's Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks. It never fails to get me moving, and I love working out to the Rapture, but it is also slightly dangerous because not only I want to start singing along, but I always want to jump off the elliptical and start dancing in the middle of the gym.

One of the greatest things about The Rapture is that they have this raw anger that they channel through irresistible beats. So I think that they provide the perfect release for really anything....having a bad day? just dance/ scream it off.

I wanted to post a song of the day, but alas I had a full day and when I did get around to listening t music, it was a two hour Radiohead session....

Even though I would have no problem posting another radiohead song, I felt like I should push myself a bit for the sake of variety.

So today's was actually my roommate's pick who has been playing Friendly Fire's Paris on repeat. And I too, for a while obsessed about this song, and its fun, and dancy and it is exactly what I wanted to play.

I found out about the Friendly Fires some months ago, and they seem to be getting more and more attention. They are touring with the White Lies, so that promises to be fun!

I like how this is one of those songs that you can just let loose to, its easy to sing along...and seriously who doesn't want to move to Paris to meet a French boy?

Another uninnocent fall into the unmagnificant lives of adults

I figured that I better cut the slack and make a post!

So, for those of you who know me you know that at one point in time I was obsessed with The Lonely Island. It had been a while since I'd watched their vidoes. It wasn't that I had forgotten about them, but new videos and such came along. Recently though they have had much success with their SNL digital shorts, such as jizz in my pants.

There have been many occasions where something happens in my life and I think to myself that would be such a good SNL sketch or digital short. Andy, Akiva, and Jorma make those random thoughts happen! aand they're actually funny.

I wish that I was at the point in my life that I could do this:



To conclude.. they came out with a cd of all of their songs called incredibad.

...If I had money I would buy it. But for now I'll just continue looking up their youtube videos. sigh.

CONCERTS!!!!

So I just found out about this... THE NATIONAL is to tour this spring.....and i'm very exited with two dates here in DC. Sigh, but at the same time, there are so many concerts this spring that I want to go to, that my pockets are hurting!

I'm not going to lie, I'm a big advocate for concert going in general, but they are just one of those bands that I urge you to see live, the beauty and the intesity of the songs become so much sharper, its irresistable. You get to feel their beautiful songs on a whole new level, seriously I think that Mistaken For Strangers is enough of a reason to see them live--I have yet to meet a person who hasn't fallen in love with that song. What's more, their track for Dark Was The Night is also stunning. I have a feeling that they are going to continue making gut wrenching beautiful music, so you owe it to yourself to see them live.

nanda's song of the day

I've been obsessing about this song for a while... its strange how long it took for me to get into Grizzly Bears. I think the reason is that to truly appreciate a band, you have to be in the right mindset/ mood.

I mean, I was introduced to Radiohead a long time ago, but it wasn't until last year that I really got into into them, and it wasn't until I saw them live that it became a full blown obsession.

Anyway, I just happened to stumble upon this a capella version of The Knife... besides the fact that its beautiful, I love how they are singing in the streets of Paris, and that you can tell that they feel a little self conscious about it!

Its great, so check it out.

Fernanda's song of the day

As most you know, and as I detailed in the previous post, Radiohead performed at the Grammy's. Frankly, I don't think I really comprehended what I saw on tv. I spent most of the time being thrown off by what seemed to be overt dance moves, to really appreciate the perfomance (don't get me wrong, I'm well accustomed to Thom's dancing, in fact, its one of the many reasons why I currently worship the guy).

So, my first reaction to matching band supported version of 15 step wasn't the most favorable one, but I think its because it was too much for me to take in at once. I dont know, but upon repeatly watching it, I've come to the conclusion that many had already acheived, and that is, that Radiohead is brilliant, their performance was, in fact, amazing, and like a friend of mine once said, Radiohead are gods. There is no question.

And in celebration of it all, my song of today is Radiohead's Grammy performance of 15 step.

The Grammys...

I'm not going to lie, the only reason why I watched was for Radiohead, and today I realized that I'm seriously obsessed. Whenever I thought it might be their turn to perform, my heart would start palpitating and I would shush any noise. My cell was handy so that I could immediately notify Sasha of when they came on, so she could see them too.

All ridiculousness aside, comparatively this grammys wasn't so bad. There were some good performances, I particularly enjoyed Dave Grohl drumming for Paul McCartney. People told me that M.I.A's joint act with lil' wayne, kayne, jay z, ect was good. I spaced out.

Radiohead's performance was intriguing. When I heard that they were going to perform a song with a marching band, I thought it would be amazing. Although it was great, I wasn't blown away by it, I feel like I've seen better performances by them, for example this live rendition of How To Disappear Completely is incredible.

Thom Yorke seemed almost out of character, maybe a little too enthusiastic in a thug-life kinda way lol, or maybe he was just showing off how hes way better than half of the performers, thats right katy perry, I'm talking to you. According to knowledgeable source the sound guy wasn't doing a very good job, so that might account to why I didnt get butterflies in my stomach when I heard them, as it usually happens. But upon a second look, it was brilliant, they are amazing.

All that aside tho, I thought that it was cool/ outlandish that all marching band members were wearing Radiohead's shirt, maybe it was to make up for the fact that half of the band wasn't there. Thom Yorke's dance moves were heightened in this performance, and I'm all for that--you KNOW he had fun! I'm jealous of the audience.

hahaha, at one moment when Thom was really getting into it, I just imagined Kayne suddenly appearing (cuz seriously he was everywhere! calm down, man... seriously chill.)

Radiohead grabbed two grammys, one for best alternative album, and one for best boxed or special edition album. I guess, its good that they are getting recognition, but does any one really care about the grammys anyway?

Hostile Take Over and the Triumph of Diplomacy

This week we were ambushed by a gang of rap loving boys. But through the magic of diplomacy, i.e. talking in circles, we were able to reach a compromise and allow them rap time on our on and on our terms.

LOL political intrigues aside, our show was a hot mess as usual! First as you will notice, the first couple of minutes is a recording of the djs before us, and they were talking some craziness. Then, I decide that its a good idea to mess around with the internet while a song is playing and cause to stop. And then, we played RAP! Seriously, its hard to make head or tails of this week's edition, but its all good!

Sasha put together a great set of songs, and we worked our magic! We started this week with Animal Collective's In the Flowers because seriously, who isn't obsessing about their new album???
